Abstract
Reading comprehension skill is very necessary for students to receive information and knowledge from something they have read. However, there are still many students who have problems with their reading comprehension skills. Students have difficulty in understanding the reading in the assessment work which then affects the students' English grades. This study aims to find out more about the things that hinder students from being able to understand an English reading and also to see if these factors have an impact on students’ reading comprehension skills. This study used qualitative methods in the form of in-depth interviews with six students of grade X MA Nurul Yaqin Sorong. From the results of the study, it was found that there are three main factors that hinder students' reading comprehension skills, they are lack of vocabulary, lack of motivation, and weak of prior knowledge. From the result of the study, it is also found that these inhibiting factors cause many impacts that end up in the low scores of students' assessments. The finding of this study will help teachers to indicate the symptoms of students who experience problems in their reading comprehension so that students' abilities can be improved by solving these problems.
